James 1:9-11

06.14.07 (original entry)

["The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business."]

What is the high position of a brother in humble circumstances? It is the realization that a dreadful sinner has been saved from the clutches of sin. It is the realization that the judge had pronounced guilt and yet an undeserved pardon, a total reprieve, was undeservedly extended. It is watching another, an innocent man, being taken away and executed for the crime you have committed. It is the realization that the substitute chose to die for your trespasses, and that His willingness to save you is because of His deep love for you. It is a bloody hand of the king placing a crown on the head of a peasant.

What is the low position of one who is rich? It is the realization that what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). It is the realization that God desires His servant to be poor in spirit, humble towards His great provision (Matthew 5:3). It is the realization that man's great treasure is God Himself (Matthew 6:19-21). It is a man who seeks to find ways to help others, rather than constantly feeding his own earthly appetite. It is being rich toward God. It is a bloody hand of the king placing a crown on the head of a peasant.
